چکیده

Quorum sensing is a type of cell to cell communication used to coordinate behavior in groups based on population density. We present a mathematical model of this phenomenon in bacterial biofilms, consisting of a nonlinear diffusion reaction system. The model includes production and spatial spreading of biomass, conversion of down-regulated biomass into up-regulated biomass as a consequence of the quorum sensing signalling molecule concentration, and convective and diffusive transport of nutrients and quorum sensing molecules. In numerical experiments, using quantitative parameter data derived from P.putida experiments, we investigate how the hydrodynamic environment and nutrient conditions contribute to biofilm growth and quorum sensing behaviour. Our main findings are the observation of flow-facilitated inter-colony communication, and that at sufficiently high bulk flow rates, biofilm growth and signalling molecule production is enhanced, yet washout of signalling molecules suppresses quorum sensing induction. A discussion of the ecological implications of these results is included.

3-D Numerical Simulations of Biofilm Dynamics with Quorum Sensing in a Flow Cell

We develop a multiphasic hydrodynamic theory for biofilms taking into account interactions among various bacterial phenotypes, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), quorum sensing (QS) molecules, solvent, and possibly antibiotics. In the model, bacteria are classified into down-regulated QS, upregulated QS, and non QS cells based on their QS ability. We then develop a second-order numerical...

INHIBITORY EFFECT OF STEVIA AND ROSA EXTRACTS AGAINST BACTERIAL QUORUM SENSING

Background & Aims: Quorum Sensing is a mechanism by which orchestrate the expression of many genes in bacteria. Therefore, any interference with the system will inhibit bacterial infections. The principal purpose of the research was to evaluate the potential of anti-quorum sensing of Rosa damascena and Stevia rebaudiana against Staphylococcus aureus. Materials & Methods: Ten isolates of Staphy...

Low concentrations of local honey modulate ETA expression, and quorum sensing related virulence in drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from infected burn wounds

Objective(s): Honey’s ability to kill microorganisms and even eradication of chronic infections with drug-resistant pathogens has been documented by numerous studies. The present study is focused on the action of honey in its sub-inhibitory levels to impact on the pathogens coordinated behaviors rather than killing them. Materials and Methods:</strong...

3-D Numerical Simulations of Biofilm Dynamics with Quorum Sensing in a Flow Cell IMI PREPRINT SERIES

Biofilms are microorganisms, where bacteria are embedded in networks formed by bacteria-produced expopolysacharrides, also known as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Bacteria in biofilms communicate and cooperate with each other by sensing the density of signalling molecules that bacteria excrete. This phenomenon is known as quorum sensing (QS). In this paper, we develop a hydrodynamic ...

A Mathematical Model of Quorum Sensing Induced Biofilm Detachment

BACKGROUND Cell dispersal (or detachment) is part of the developmental cycle of microbial biofilms. It can be externally or internally induced, and manifests itself in discrete sloughing events, whereby many cells disperse in an instance, or in continuous slower dispersal of single cells. One suggested trigger of cell dispersal is quorum sensing, a cell-cell communication mechanism used to coor...
